  1. Throughout timeless history, literature has become a part of various testaments from individuals’ perspectives. The quote “Literature is life” is significant; most history books or textbooks are constantly edited with a mention of few major events. Other historical events may not be considered as important; therefore, it is excluded and forgotten. However, literature integrates lost or unsung historical events. For example, W.E.B. Dubois was a widely known, well-respected African American that tried to help his people through education.
In his The Souls of Black Folks, Dubois discusses how 10 percent of blacks should take advantage of acquiring as much education as they possibly could. After they reached a certain status, it is their responsibility to help others reach the same point. Literature helps future generations comprehend Dubois’ intentions and how he felt.

  2. Good literature is more than just telling a story - it mirrors aspects of human emotions and behaviour, it does so n word rather than visual images, but in its highest form is considered art.Literature is life.
If you want to know what, deep down, people feel and experience, you can do no better than read the stories and poems of the human race. Writers of literature have the gift of observing and then expressing in words the essential experiences of people. The rewards of reading literature are significant.
Literature helps to humanize us. It expands our range of experiences. It fosters awareness of ourselves and the world. It enlarges our compassion for people. It awakens our imaginations. It expresses our feelings and insights about God, nature, and life. It enlivens our sense of beauty. And it is a constructive form of entertainment.

This quote describes all pieces of literature ever created. I say this because I believe it was created for entertainment. For instance, my grandmother loves historical romance novels. Without them, how would she be able to travel to places like London, France, Scotland or Ireland? She can’t do it physically (well she technically can) but with literature, she’s able to.
Authors like Kate Chopin, Ida B. Wells… Poets like Paul Laurence Dunbar, Robert Frost and Carl Sandburg… They keep the mind enticed. It’s a way of life! To be able to have and read literature to travel, to challenge the mind, to do anything. Just think, what would they have done in the 1800s if there wasn’t literature? What would people do on those long train rides across country without literature? Literature is not only life; it is a way of life for those who take that chance to experience it.

  5. " An assumption develops that one cannot live life and understand life at the same time. I would not agree exactly. Which is to say I would not exactly disagree. I would say that life understood is life lived."-waking life. I was writing poetry with Mr McInnis and he told me to not think like a philosopher and think like a poet. This thought came to me as I was thinking of the poem "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking" in that it was a poem about the philosophy of poetry. This thought is extended when we see that he talks about life and death as well as the birth of the poet. Life is being understood and lived through the birth of the poet whose philosophy is to give voice to all of the songs of nature.

  6. Literature is life. Literature is wrapped around the authors’ life or experiences the authors have been through or seen people go through. In many works that we have discussed in class authors use aspects of their life or the things that they have heard about in their writing. In Robert Frost, “Provide, Provide”, it shows that literature is life because it is saying no matter how much money and/or fame you have you will start to look old and become old and you cannot stop that, no matter what because it is a part of life. Also in “Provide, Provide” it gives advice on things. In Lines 13-15 it stated, “Some have relied on what they know, Others on being simply true. What worked for them might work for you.” That happens every day because we as people do learn from other people mistakes and our own mistakes, which is the way of life.

  7. “Literature is Life”, is a valid statement. When writers began to compose literature, those ideas spur from some kind of emotion, whether it’s happy, sad, or insane. That’s why it’s important we read the biographies of the authors as we read their works because a lot of the times, their own life mirrors the themes they write about. For example, in American Literature, we read a lot of Emily Dickinson works. Dickinson was so secluded and melancholy. The death of so many friends and family members haunted her spirit, and she wrote a great bit of stories in that same tone. For example, “Because I Could Not Stop for Death,” a story that describes life’s last journey of reminisces before death.

  8. "Literature is Life". This is a very true statement. Every literature piece has a moral or real life experience to it. Every piece of literature we read tugs at our heartstrings at least a little. The reason being is because we can all relate to this. One specific poem I could relate to completely was that of Kate Chopin. If I was a woman in today's society I would probably still feel that I could not express myself to the fullest because it seems that certain aspects of equality are still lingering within the air. Without literature we would not be able to see what the deep inner most thoughts of some people are because some people can only express themselves through writing and not speech. This keeps us at least half way communicating because its hard to really communicate now with all the new technology like facebook and twitter where all you have to do is text someone instead of face to face or talking which will eventually be a problem.

  10. "Literature is life" is a true statement because authors use literature for more than just telling a story. Authors use literature to illustrate their perspective of the world or things that he or she might be personally going through. Carl Sandburg's literary piece "Chicago," shows the reader what it is to be in Chicago through his eyes. He paints a picture for the reader where he is not covering the surface, but he goes in depth about his home, which is a part of him. Literature also opens doors to the inner most thoughts, like in Emily Dickinson's poems we get a glimpse of what her life is. Her poems takes the reader inside her mind just like all works of literature. Literature is not merely words, but it is so much deeper.

I would have to agree with this statement. Literature tells us stories, teaches us lessons and most importantly gives us the perception of life from the eyes of the author. Being able to view the world differently is what makes literature fun, fulfilling, yet also challenging. When looking at works such as "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar, you see and feel what the writer is experiencing. This is what he wants! Dunbar wanted his experiences with inequality and racism to inspire and evoke the emotions of others. Poems such as "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg don't necessarily evoke such strong emotions as Dunbar's, however through the use of imagery and personification Sandburg is able to paint a clear, and vivid picture in the minds of his audience.

Literature is the art of written or spoken work. It can introduce us to new perspectives and experiences on life. The quote “literature is life” to me is important because without literature we would not have any knowledge or formal education. Literature can be used as an educational tool as well as a use for leisure or entertainment. Becoming a member of the English department has introduced me to different genres of literature such as poems, short stories, and plays.
In Ida B.Wells story Mob Rule in New Orleans she uses literature to show how the police department, justice system, and media are cruel and inhuman towards African Americans. Wells and other writers of her time found a way to voice their opinions on the subject of violence towards black people by writing. Literature is powerful because it can be the voice of so many things such as reason and change.

  14. Literature is an artistic expression of thought and long lasting merit. Though life is not long lasting, one spends their whole life expressing. "Literature is life" simply because literature is based off of life experiences or desires. Literature's sole purpose is to allow an author, idea, scenario, or desire to live on forever. Representing growth or setbacks, literature correlates to life. Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" is the epitome of life after death through literature. The speaker expresses how death took her on a journey while she witnessed her old life pass her by. The only way to go back in time is through literary works; therefore, "Literature is life."

  15. Literature is Life can be related to any piece of literature. Literature helps cultures and individuals live on through their writings after their physical life has ended. This quotation can be parralleled to the poem "Nothing Gold can Stay". This poem talks about all good things coming to an end. this theme carries on through life. All good things eventually end; seasons, people, etc. But literature, just like life, is on going and never ending. Literature acts as recorded life, continuing to educate an inform after our expiration. Literature has been handed down through many cultures and can be found all over the world. One who has never traveled the world can obtain kowledge from the right book on any culture surrounding them.

  16. The Truth supports that Literature is life. Literature comes from the attempt to share life. It often expresses the best of life in order to make it that much more real. Literature is potential as we all gain from it and it convinces us of something. Claude McKay's "If We Must Die" is a furious expression of the testimony that though you are alive you will die. There are those, people and ideas, who would take it all from you one second at a time or all at once. “Even the monsters we defy shall be constrained to honor us though dead.” This poem bids us recognize a common foe that we may be united against and change through our challenge. This common foe can be anything. It can be ignorance or growth, subjugation or ascendance. Those who are alive cannot afford any time at its mercy. Literature compels life. It has the power to transform or warp it. It reveals it. It is it.

  17. Although I am not a writer, I believe the quote “literature is life” is true. Literature helps writers express their emotions. It also helps some discuss major issues occurring at the time. Fictional literature also affects life because it deals with people’s emotions and situations occurring in real life but in a way that is engaging for the reader. For example, in The Tortoise and The Hare, the moral of the story is slow and steady wins the race. Many young children are familiar with this story but it could teach them a lesson that stays with them for a lifetime. To know that they could have gained this lesson just from reading a book shows how literature affects life.

  18. The quote "Literature is Life" is true because literature mirrors all aspects of human emotions and behavior. It is also an expression of both individual and social life. It does this with words instead of images. Writers either write about what is happening in their lives or what has happened in their lives. In "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain" Langston Hughes writes about being a negro artist in America. He writes about what is happening in his life and in his country. He cannot write about what it is like to be a white artist because he does not know that life. He only knows about what is happening in his own individual life. Literature is more than just story telling. It is life.
